February Events from the Women’s Law Society

by ursavoice

There is no “one” women’s issue—all issues have a gendered component, and women’s issues are human issues. The Women’s Law Society is using this month to get the school taking about them, and from myriad angles. We’ve prepared a fantastic line up of events, and each one highlights another type of story.

February 5, 4:45pm (EDU 1111):
WLS, OutLaw, the Entertainment Law Society, and the Speakers’ Series present:
The Invisible War

The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 19,000 violent sex crimes in the military in 2010, and this Oscar-nominate investigative documentary blows open how these crimes can be belittled or ignored.

After the screening, director Kirby Dick and Susan Burke, the lead attorney in Cioca v. Rumsfeld and four other class actions against the U.S. military, will be here to discuss their work. A reception in their honor will follow.

February 7, 12pm (Law 3750):
WLS, the Immigration and Migration Society, APALSA, and LLSA present:
The End of VAWA?
The Expiration of the Violence Against Women Act

Professor Chacon will join us and discuss what the expiration of VAWA means for immigrant men and women. Lunch will be provided.

February 14, 12pm (EDU 1111):
WLS, the Criminal Law Society, and the Speakers’ Series present:
Professor Sarah Buel

Buel, a survivor of domestic violence herself, has worked for more than 30 years with battered women and children. She is a leading—and compelling—advocate for victims of domestic violence and founded the Harvard Battered Women’s Advocacy Project, the Harvard Women in Prison Project, the Harvard Children and Family Rights Project, and the University of Texas Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

And of course…
